He won gallantry award from Pandit Jawarhal Lal Nehru at the age of 14, but now at the age of 64, he lives the life of an unsung hero in the by-lanes of Chandi Chowk, Old Delhi, India
- An icon at the age of 14 and an insignificant person at 64. This is Harish Chander Mehra, the first gallantry award winner who now lives unsung in the bylanes of Katra Neel in Chandni Chowk.
- The honour was bestowed on him in 1958 by then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, whose life he had saved. Still then, the awards are now given to children annually on Indian Republic Day and they pass through Rajpath, near India Gate, sitting on an elephant.
- The reminiscences are stamped in Mehra’s heart and the pain of having been elapsed once the short dalliance with famous person’s status died.
- Recollecting the incident Mehra quoted “On October 2, 1957 evening, during the Ram Lila celebrations in Old Delhi’s Ramlila Ground, Nehru along with his daughter, Indira Gandhi and some foreign delegates was watching the fireworks that preceded the function. Suddenly, some sparks fell on the tent in which they were sitting and it caught fire.”
- The congested place had people running haphazardly to accumulate their lives. Mehra, then a boy scout, was standing at the entrance hall of the pergola. He entered the flaming tent and ran near Nehru and instantaneously pulled him in the direction of the dais. In a fraction of seconds, he climbed on to one of the poles, pulled out the scouts’ knife and cut off the burning tent. In the scuffle, Mehra’s hands got rigorously blistered and he gone unconscious.
- Mehra was presented with a certificate on the nexdt morning by Minister Jagjivanram. After three months, while studying in Class 8, his Principal, Tej Bhan Sethi entered the classroom and took the dazed child to the string of media persons and photographers waiting for him on the school grounds.
- In the same year,The following year, a special programme was organised to honour Mehra and he was presented the Gallantry Award by Nehru at Teen Murti Bhawan.
“Nehru had said that I needed no introduction, as he was himself an eyewitness to the whole account. He said it would be better if we could have more children of undoubted courage,” says the shuddering Mehra.
- Newspapers published Mehra’s profiles and interviews. A documentary film was made followed by an invitation to participate in the Republic Day parade held on January 26, 1959. A civilian boy was made to lead the parade for the first time. Five years later, due to economic crisis, Mehra had to quit studies. He took up a job as Lower Divisions Clerk in Union Public Service Commission.
- After few years he was transferred to the Controller of Publications with no incentive and promotion. He retired from there on February 27, 2004.Apart from the populace in close proximity to him, no one ever since remembered Mehra. Every year, Mehra sits with his three sons and four grandchildren to gaze at the Republic Day parade on TV. The award winning children surpass all the way through Rajpath, memoirs draw closer once again for Mr Mehra.

- There’s a sagacity of satisfaction and triumph in the Tamil film industry after Rajinikanth won NDTV’s Best Indian Entertainer of The Year award.
- Rajinikanth’s most hyped Film Sivaji, released in the year 2007 catapulted him ahead of Shah Rukh Khan and the Big B. But in his marque humbleness the ’style king’ gave the media credit for his success.
- “Thanks to the media, artistes from South India are being recognised and their films highlighted,” said Rajinikanth.
In Chennai, the film industry is ecstatic over Rajinikanth’s award.
“Rajini usually does not accept awards or attend most public functions. That he has accepted the NDTV award is great. Also given the fact that he was pitted against Shah Rukh Khan and won is also a big boost,” said Sreedhar Pillai, Senior Film Journalist.
And this spontaneous hint that he is not unenthusiastic to captivating the political thrust seems to have inspired his fans like never before.
“I believe in destiny. Today, I am an actor. I don’t know what role I will play tomorrow. It all depends upon what I’ destined for,” said Rajinikanth.
“If he enters politics, he will bring about good governance. He will help the poor. We will see him as a small MGR,” said Annadurai, Rajinikanth fan.
Rajini is now off to the Himalayas for his habitual reflection. Conceivably the clandestine behind his aptitude to grip all the praise and yet stay engaged.

- Lamenting Parvathi Aggarwal of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki is hooked on to Bollywood soon; you will soon see her in films. In the meanwhile, she will be entering the Virani household for a second time. She will play a major role in helping Tulsi get Mihir out from jail.
- Mona Singh a.k.a plain jane of Jassi Jaisa Koyi Nahi, will be hosting one more reality show soon ,as the Jhlak Dikhla Jaa show is approaching to closing stages.
- Abishek Bachan will be seen in a television reality show after his Bollywood flop shows.
- When media persons approached Shewta Tiwari to discern her response about Kasuti Zindaji Ki going off-air, she reacted”I am yet to get a word on it from Balaji Productionsâ€, poor Shewta, she may be really disconsolate, as KZK had given her lot of reputation and celebrity status!
- After Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh earned the 1st slot in the glorious ‘Nach Baliye 3’ Finale, it’s time to reveal the 2nd Jodi. On Saturday, Dec 15th the remaining 3 jodis: Karan-Amita, Rakhi-Abhishek and Kashmera-Krushna battle it out to snatch the chance to furrow in the finals.
- Both, Karan-Amita and Kashmera-Krushna deliver marvellous performances but, the strength of the competition grows when Rakhi-Abhishek dance like there was no tomorrow. A brilliant dance notion became awfully shocking with Rakhi’s wardrobe malfunction as choli she is wearing opens halfway through the performance exposing her entire back. However, realizing that this dance was her only chance to make it to the finals, she does not stop. She hold on to her choli and completes the dance.
- The symptoms of wardrobe malfunction had occurred previously too in India with models during their ramp walk. Carol Gracious and Najar Khan are a few examples whose tops were dropped during ramp walk. Rumourmongers observed it as a premeditated one as a lot of models do these types of strategy to get excessive media hype.
- Then comes the moment to announce the second finalist. The audience wonder if Rakhi-Abhishek could have taken the cake for their courageous performance or would it be Kashmera-Krushna or the very popular Karan-Amita.
- Dia Mirza puts an end to the anxiety as she clicks a Polaroid picture of the 2nd finalist to put up on our ‘Nach Baliye 3’ Wall of Fame, and reveals Jodi no. 3, Rakhi–Abhishek as the 2nd finalist.
- To checkout more excitement tune into ‘Nach Baliye 3’ on Star Plus this weekend at 8pm IST.
- The present season of ‘Koffee With Karan’ hosted by K Jo has come to an end and to make its splendid culmination more unique, Karan will have Bollywood’s presently hot couple Abhishek and Aishwarya. He has also designed some Koffee awards like Best Rapidfire Contestant, Best Supporting Guest etc. These awards will be judged by Malaika Arora Khan, Cyrus Broacha, Rahul Bose, Rohit Bal and Karan himself to select best of the guests of this season. Soon K Jo will be planning a variety programme too, but first after he finishes his film.

Dr.Kiran Bedi, IPS Officer is a role model to the women of substance:
- · According to Kiran Bedi , “My concept of a modern woman is a liberated woman. Educated or not, economically independent or not, such a woman is capable of taking her own decisions and standing by them, and-whether she suffers from them or not-she does not look for a shoulder to weep on.” Even so, she says, women “need more quality education and much more vocational training to become truly empowered.” Property ownership is another key to empowerment. “With ownership (or joint ownership),” she says, “a man cannot drink away the family’s property, or sell it and leave the woman and children on the street.· Accomplishing that goal has become the number one priority of the National Commission for Women in India, but the government continues to drag its feet. Political parties must come together in support of this program as well as in support of family planning and more equitable educational opportunities. If they do not, the next generation will not have enough schools, teachers, transportation, health care, housing, or work. Such a situation is a recipe for civil unrest.” For India as a whole, Kiran says, “the key to change lies in the empowerment of village women-the largest percentage of women in India-but change in rural areas is agonizingly slow in coming.”
· Empowerment is related to population. “India is a rich country and should be a beautifully developed country,” Kiran says. “If population had been controlled twenty years ago there would be surplus rather than scarcity, and current growth would not be held captive by the ever-present need to feed new mouths. Women must learn and be allowed to say, ‘No! I don’t want any more than this.’ When that day arrives, daughters will be seen to be as much of an asset as sons, because educated daughters will be as equally capable to take care of parents in their old age as sons. Therefore, economically empowered women are crucial in the struggle to shape a new India.”
· In 1994, backing up her commitment to support reform in several areas, Kiran created the India Vision Foundation, a registered nongovernmental organization designed to carry out projects in the fields of prison reform, drug abuse prevention, empowerment of women, assistance to the mentally disabled, and sports promotion.
· Kiran, who has lived most of her life in the public view, has become a role model for Indian women-the disadvantaged, the marginalized, and the voiceless. Many believe that she literally embodies the struggle for gender equality. She has constantly had to fight against the commonly accepted bias that she is, after all, only female. She has had to battle systems that codify the dehumanization of women, and cultures that are all too willing to toss the talents and potential contributions of women on the rubbish dump. Kiran’s “crimes” have included functioning as an equal, speaking the truth as she saw it, having and implementing original ideas, working hard, and garnering success. And her lack of interest in “playing the game,” within a service in which professionalism has been replaced by favouritism, has been costly both professionally and personally. Although she has realized her childhood dream to “count for something,” her path has not been easy or without the need for sacrifice.
· Even her achievements and awards for service fuel controversy. Some, in looking at her history, see a dedicated and successful officer. Others, generally from among the ranks of the privileged and powerful, see an uppity woman-a narcissistic, publicity-hungry, regulation-flaunting, self-serving, rogue officer who constantly needs to be kept in her place.
· There is no need to say anything specific about this great Indian,” says Gulzar, “She won the Magasaysay Award for her work among prisoners. She has shown what a police officer should be like to our country. She is an icon and a model for all Indian women. We are proud of her because of her many-splendour personality. Whichever function she graces, she adds enlightenment and humour to it. Hers is truly an awesome presence.”
· The first woman IPS officer of India was denied the post of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi. Known for her dedication, she changed the face of Tihar prison as IG, Prisons. She is known for her outstanding work as Police Advisor in the UN peacekeeping department.
· Kiran Bedi, New Delhi’s renowned Inspector General of Prisons, described her presence at Asia Plateau as `a pilgrimage fulfilled’. She had been the first woman recruited to the Indian Police Force, in the 1970s, and when supervisor of Asia’s largest prison, in New Delhi, had introduced Gandhian philosophy and practice. This had dramatically.
· Whatever the outcome, her commitment to family planning, prison reform, women’s emancipation, and education for independence will continue.
· As Kiran Bedi likes Anne Dresskell’s saying “If you look out to do something, it is always possible.”

Priyanaka Chopra Is A Superwoman
The actress has teamed up with Virgin Comics to create a new superhero character for comic books, animation and games.’I love cartoons and animation, so being able to create my own original superhero with Virgin’s amazing group of artists and storytellers is a dream come true. I hope it will capture the imagination of a new generation of Indian youth,’ an excited Priyanka said of the venture.
It
came as no surprise when Shimit Amin’s Chak De! India, a gritty tale of
Indian women hockey players that also starred 90 Australian players and
over 9,000 Australian extras, won the Best Film Award at the 5th
Australian Indian Film Festival gala night in Sydney on Thursday.
Shimin also thanks Australians for accepting to lose in the final match
in the film. “They were gracious and sportsmanlike in their defeat.”
The Sydney festival, which has writer and director Yash Chopra as its
patron, is attended by over 40,000 people each year. This year’s
screenings include Cheeni Kum, Dhoom 2, Eklavya, The Namesake and Laaga
Chunari Main Daag.
Indian heartthrob Akshaye Khanna received the Best Performance Award
for his role in Gandhi My Father at the glittering ceremony hosted for
the first time at the Museum of Contemporary Arts, situated on the
Harbour foreshore overlooking the iconic Opera House.
The awards were chosen by an esteemed group of Australian film critics,
including Peter Thompson (Showtime), Margaret Pomeranz (ABC TV At The
Movies), Nell Schofield (Channel 9 Sunday Show), Marc Fennell (Triple
J), Adrienne McKibbons (Metro Magazine) and Ian Taylor (ABC TV).
Back home, Chak de! India has won applause from audiences and critics
alike. “I am encouraged to do something different. Chak de! India has
been great for Indian audiences at home and abroad,” Amin said.
